Expanding recycling and extracting energy
from our waste through new technologies
Jurisdictions served by the Tajiguas Landfill successfully divert more than 70% of their municipal solid waste from the landfill. We are looking at different technologies and new diversion programs to manage what is still being buried.
Efforts are underway to establish a Resource Recovery Park at Tajiguas Landfill, which will allow our community to do something other than landfilling and get more resources fro our trash. Read more>>>
Watch a short video to learn more about Conversion Technology:
After careful study of the alternatives and obtaining significant input from the community, the County of Santa Barbara and the participating cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, Solvang and Buellton approved a Request for Proposals to establish a public-private partnership to build new facilities at that Tajiguas Landfill that would increase recycling and convert waste into energy. No taxpayer funds are to be used to build the facility.
In 2010, four companies submitted proposals to process waste and potentially generate green energy. After careful analysis of the proposals, a project team of local elected officials requested that project staff obtain public input on three different proposals.
In 2011, the evaluation of the proposals was completed with two companies chosen as finalists: Plasco Energy Group and Mustang Renewable Power Ventures.
